fUNDAMENTALS cLASS
In our fundamentals class, you’ll train using foam longswords to allow for safe, focused learning. Each session follows a consistent structure: we begin with a warm-up, continue with footwork and solo drills, and then move into a weekly rotating topic based on a core fencing principle. These eight principles cycle regularly, so you’ll be able to revisit key concepts and deepen your understanding over time.
This program is not tied to a single historical fencing system. Instead, we focus on the universal principles that underlie all fencing traditions — such as distance, timing, structure, line, control, and intent. By the end of the program, you'll have a functional understanding of these core ideas and how they apply across different weapons and styles.
To ensure safety and maintain the quality of instruction in our advanced classes, all students are required to complete at least four fundamental classes before moving on to other weapon-focused sessions. Depending on your experience and comfort level, more classes may be recommended before transitioning. This requirement helps us ensure that all fencers are equipped with the control and awareness needed for more complex drills and sparring.
Starting in January we will be running our same fundamentals curriculum through the lens of saber. We will practice the same general sword principals used with the longsword and explore their use with saber. If you have been curious about 1 handed swords, British military swordsmanship, or just want to learn to fight like a pirate, now is your chance! The series will be 8 weeks long, with a new topic each week. We will be utilizing a “singlestick” as the saber simulator, which is the historical training tool. We will also be exploring the use of the saber in group and naval combat.
